Not all welding credentials carry equal weight. Here's the sequence that moves you from trainee to qualified tradesperson:
- AWS D1.1 (Structural Welding Code — Steel) — The plate test most structural and fabrication shops require. Covers fillet and groove welds in 3G and 4G positions on plate steel. The credential that opens structural work at fab shops, buildings, and bridges. Most entry-level welders sit for this within their first year of training.
- ASME Section IX (Welding & Brazing Qualifications — Pipe & Pressure Vessels) — Required for pipe and pressure vessel work. Covers 6G position testing (pipe in a fixed-inclined position). The credential that unlocks the highest-paying pipe welding lane at refineries, power plants, and chemical facilities.
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) — The industry gold standard for inspectors and quality-control roles. Three-part exam covering welding fundamentals, code application, and practical inspection. Separates hands-on welders from QC and supervisory career tracks. Often paired with 5+ years of field welding experience before sitting for the exam.
- AWS Certified Welding Educator (CWE) / Welding Supervisor (CWS) — Specialty credentials for welders moving into teaching (technical schools, union training centers) or supervisory roles at fab shops and construction sites. Blueprint Reading & Weld Symbols
AWS A2.4 weld symbols, isometric drawings, P&IDs, and shop fabrication drawings. Mastery here is the baseline for any structural or pipe role — every job starts with a print.
Process Proficiency (GMAW/FCAW/GTAW/SMAW)
Competency across MIG (GMAW), flux-core (FCAW), TIG (GTAW), and stick (SMAW). Most shops expect at least two processes on day one; pipe and stainless work requires all four at production speed.
1G Through 6G Position Work
Flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead (1G–4G) for structural; plus the 6G pipe position test that unlocks the highest-paying work. Position mastery is what separates certified welders from production welders.
Inspection & QC Knowledge
Visual inspection, weld defect identification (porosity, undercut, lack of fusion), NDT awareness (UT, RT, MT, PT), and procedure qualification record (PQR) literacy. Required for QC leads and the CWI career track.
Choosing a welding process specialization
Welding is unusually process-driven — the process you pick shapes your wage ceiling, where you work, and what kind of work you do. Here's the breakdown of the main specializations:
- MIG / GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding): The most common entry-level process — continuously-fed wire electrode, fast deposition rate. Dominates automotive, general fabrication, and entry-level structural work. Easiest to learn, lowest entry barrier, $22–35/hr national range.
- TIG / GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding): Precision process using a non-consumable tungsten electrode and separate filler rod. Slower and more demanding to master, but required for thin-gauge stainless, aluminum, aerospace, and food-grade stainless work. $28–45/hr range with stronger demand in fabrication shops than on construction sites.
- Flux-Core / FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding): Heavy structural, shipyards, and field fabrication. The workhorse of structural welding — runs fast outdoors, handles dirty or rusty steel, and is required for most AWS D1.1 plate certification work. $26–40/hr national range.
- Stick / SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding): The original welding process. Still essential for repair work, field welding, pipeline, and heavy industrial maintenance. Stick welders are scarce and well-paid in pipeline and shutdown/turnaround work. $25–38/hr base, more on per-diem travel work.
- Pipe (ASME Section IX, 6G Position): Not a process — a qualification. Pipe welders use MIG, TIG, or stick depending on the job, but must pass a 6G test (pipe in a fixed-inclined position) to qualify. The hardest test in welding and the highest-paid lane — $40–70/hr nationally, more on shutdown and offshore work.
- Underwater Welding: Commercial diving certification plus welding. Premium specialty for dam, bridge, and offshore platform work. $55–80/hr base with significant per-diem and hazard pay on top. Demanding work in harsh conditions — not an entry-level specialization.
Most welders start on MIG or flux-core, add TIG within the first year, and decide by year three whether to pursue structural certification, pipe qualification, or the CWI inspector track. The process choice you make early on shapes the rest of the career.
Career progression — where you can go
Most welders think the path is helper → welder → foreman. That works, but welding has more high-paying lanes than most trades:
- Welder Helper ($18–22/hr): Entry-level support role — grinding, fit-up, material handling. The first 6–12 months for most welders. Learn the shop, the prints, and the welders above you.
- Apprentice / Entry Structural Welder ($22–30/hr): Trade school graduate or apprenticeship year 1–2. Welds in flat and horizontal positions on structural steel. Working toward AWS D1.1 plate certification.
- Structural Welder ($28–42/hr): AWS D1.1 certified, welds 3G and 4G positions on plate steel. The first real market rate for a certified structural welder — fab shops, buildings, bridges.
- Pipe / All-Position Welder ($40–60/hr): ASME Section IX 6G qualified. The highest-paid hands-on welding lane. Refineries, power plants, chemical facilities, and shutdown/turnaround contractors.
- Lead Welder / Foreman ($45–65/hr): Manages a crew, sequences work, and runs the weld floor. Often salaried at $90K–$120K with truck and tool allowance. Step before moving into QC or operations management.
- CWI Inspector ($60–85/hr or $70–100K salary): AWS Certified Welding Inspector. Visual inspection, sign-off on welds, code compliance, and procedure qualification. Moves welders from production work into office and field QC roles — better hours, less physical wear.
- Welding Instructor / QC Manager ($70–100K+ salary): Teaching at a technical school or running QC for a fab shop or contractor. Stable hours, strong benefits, and the credential that pulls you out of the field if you want a longer career arc.

Welding is one of the few trades where a 6–18 month trade school program can put you in a job paying $25+/hr, and where 3–4 years of focused experience can land you on a pipe crew clearing $100K+. The sequence is clear: graduate from a recognized welding program (or start as a helper and learn on the job), pass your AWS D1.1 plate test within your first year, build structural experience, and pursue ASME Section IX 6G pipe qualification when you're ready for the top wage tier.
Demand is elevated across every segment. Infrastructure spending (highways, bridges, water systems), LNG and refinery buildouts along the Gulf Coast, naval and commercial shipyard work in the Pacific Northwest, and ongoing pipeline expansion all need qualified welders. The bottleneck is testing and qualification — welders who can consistently pass 6G pipe tests are scarce and command premium pay.
