The certifications that open doors
Boilermaker credentials stack differently than most trades — they combine structural skills, welding qualifications, and heavy-industrial rigging. Here's the sequence that moves you from trainee to qualified boilermaker:
- NCCER Boilermaker Level 1–4 — The National Center for Construction Education and Research curriculum that anchors both union and non-union apprenticeship programs. Level 1 covers blueprint reading, hand tools, and rigging fundamentals; Level 2 adds layout and fabrication; Level 3 covers advanced welding processes; Level 4 finishes with code compliance, inspection, and supervisory fundamentals. The credential most industrial contractors and apprenticeship coordinators expect within the first four years.

- ASME Section IX (Welding & Brazing Qualifications — Pipe & Pressure Vessels) — The industry standard for pressure vessel and boiler repair work. Covers 6G position testing on pipe. Required for anyone working on ASME-coded pressure vessels at refineries, power plants, and chemical facilities. Often paired with NCCER Level 4 for technicians moving into inspection or QC roles.
- Boilermakers International (IBB) Journeyman Card — Awarded at completion of the four-year IBB union apprenticeship administered through Local Lodges across the U.S. and Canada. The credential that lets you work as a journeyman at IBB-signatory contractors and unlocks union benefits (pension, health, per-diem on traveling jobs). Non-union boilermakers pursue equivalent NCCER Level 4 completion through contractor-run programs.
- Rigger / Signaler Certifications — Required on crane-suspended work at refineries, power plants, and large industrial sites. NCCCO Rigger Level 1 and Level 2 cover sling selection, load calculations, and signaling; some states issue their own rigger/signaler cards. The certification that gets you on the heavy lifts and the higher-rate pay tier they attract.
- OSHA 10 / OSHA 30 — OSHA 10 is the baseline safety credential expected on commercial and industrial sites. OSHA 30 is required for foremen, supervisors, and safety leads at industrial facilities. Most IBB-signatory contractors and non-union industrial contractors require OSHA 10 within the first 90 days of employment.

Pay varies significantly by geography, the kind of facility, and whether you’re in general industrial, refinery, or specialty nuclear work. These figures reflect journeyman boilermaker pay based on 2025–2026 data across major markets.

Blueprint & Weld Symbols
AWS A2.4 weld symbols, isometric drawings, and heavy steel erection prints. Mastery here is the baseline for any structural or pressure vessel role — every boilermaker job starts with a print and the ability to translate it into layout and fit-up decisions.
Heavy Steel Rigging & Erection
Sling selection, load calculations, crane signaling, and structural assembly. Distinguishes boilermakers from general welders and structural trades. Required on every crane-suspended lift at refineries, power plants, and industrial sites.
Pressure Vessel Fabrication & Repair
Layout, fit-up, welding, and post-weld heat treatment on tanks, heat exchangers, and process vessels. The defining specialty of the trade and the highest-paying lane within boilermaking — refineries, chemical plants, and nuclear facilities all run heavy pressure vessel work.
Inspection & QC Knowledge
Visual inspection, weld defect identification, NDT awareness (UT, MT, PT), and procedure qualification record (PQR) literacy. Required for QC leads, foremen, and any nuclear or pressure-vessel work. The skill set that moves journeymen into salaried QC and supervision roles.
Choosing an apprenticeship path
Boilermakers enter the trade through one of two paths — union apprenticeship through Boilermakers International Local Lodges, or non-union apprenticeship through NCCER-aligned industrial contractor programs. Both run four years; they differ in structure, benefits, and how quickly you move into production work.
- Boilermakers International (IBB) Union Apprenticeship: Administered through approximately 100 Local Lodges across the U.S. and Canada. Four-year program combining 8,000+ hours of paid on-the-job training with 576 hours of classroom instruction at union training centers. Apprentices rotate through refinery, power plant, fabrication, and field construction assignments. Union graduates earn the IBB journeyman card, pension contributions, health benefits, and access to per-diem traveling work. Intake is competitive and runs on a Local Lodge schedule — apply directly to the nearest Lodge.
- NCCER Non-Union Apprenticeship: Run by industrial contractors, fabrication shops, and joint apprenticeship training programs. Same four-year structure and NCCER curriculum, but apprentices are typically hired directly by the contractor and route immediately into that contractor’s work — refineries, power plants, or fab shops. Faster start, but pension and health benefits vary widely by employer. Strong for candidates who already know which contractor or region they want to work in.
- Curriculum coverage: Both paths cover the same core — blueprint reading (AWS A2.4 and isometric), welding processes (typically stick/SMAW and flux-core/FCAW), layout and fabrication, rigging and signaling, and pressure vessel code (ASME Section IX). NCCER routes tend to push earlier specialization toward the contractor’s primary industry; union programs emphasize broad exposure across industrial, power, and refinery work.
- Pay progression: Apprentice wages step up annually — roughly $22/hr year one, $25/hr year two, $29/hr year three, and $34/hr by year four for both union and non-union programs. Union apprentices typically also receive full health benefits starting in year one plus pension contributions; non-union benefits vary by employer.
- Choosing between the two: If you value pension, health benefits, per-diem travel, and broad industrial exposure, the IBB Local Lodge path is the strongest fit. If you want to start faster, know which region or facility you want to work in, and prefer to skip the Local Lodge intake wait, an NCCER non-union apprenticeship through an industrial contractor is a direct route. Either path lands you at journeyman card and the same wage tier.
The trade is unusually disciplined about recognizing apprenticeship completion — both routes feed into the same journeyman labor pool, and most IBB-signatory contractors will hire qualified NCCER-level graduates alongside union card holders.
Career progression — where you can go
Boilermakers often think the path is helper → apprentice → journeyman → foreman. That’s the standard escalation, but boilermaking has more high-paying lanes — especially into nuclear, inspection, and supervision:
- Boilermaker Helper ($18–22/hr): Entry-level support role — grinding, material handling, fit-up, and tool prep. The first 6–12 months for most apprentices. Learn the prints, the welders above you, and the shop tempo.
- Apprentice / Year 1 ($22/hr): First-year apprentice on NCCER Level 1 curriculum. Working toward the foundational credential that separates trainees from qualified journeymen.
- Apprentice / Year 2–3 ($25–29/hr): Mid-program apprentice. NCCER Level 2 and Level 3 — layout, fabrication, and advanced welding processes. Building toward production-level work and the journeyman card at year four.
- Journeyman Boilermaker ($30–48/hr): IBB journeyman card or NCCER Level 4 complete. The first real market rate for a qualified boilermaker — refineries, fabrication shops, power plants, and field construction.
- Foreman / General Foreman ($45–65/hr): Sequences work, manages a crew, runs the weld floor. Often salaried at $95K–$130K with truck and tool allowance. Step before moving into QC, project management, or operations supervision.
- Boilermaker Superintendent ($70–100K+ salary): Runs multiple crews across a site or region. Coordinates with project managers, GC leadership, and QC. Salaried plus bonus structure. The top field progression a boilermaker can reach without leaving the trade.
- Nuclear Specialty / Inspection (DOE-cleared, $50–70/hr or salaried $90–130K+): ASME Section IX qualified plus DOE clearance opens the highest-paying specialty lane. Savannah River Site, Idaho National Laboratory, and commercial nuclear plants all run heavy boilermaker headcount. Stable, salaried, and benefits-heavy.
- Boilermaker Business Owner: Some journeymen hang their shingle as a specialty contractor — rig crews for turnaround and outage work, or open a fabrication shop serving local industrial clients. Income scales directly with crew size and contract backlog. The path beyond the field for journeymen with sharp business sense and a solid safety record.

Boilermaking is one of the few industrial trades where a four-year apprenticeship can put you on a refinery crew clearing $90K+ within your first year as a journeyman, and where nuclear and DOE-cleared specialties routinely top $150K. The sequence is clear: apply to your nearest Boilermakers International Local Lodge (or an NCCER non-union apprenticeship through an industrial contractor), graduate with your journeyman card at year four, build experience on refinery, power plant, or fabrication work, and pursue ASME Section IX qualification when you’re ready for the top wage tier.
Demand is elevated across every segment. LNG buildout along the Gulf Coast, ongoing refinery turnaround and outage cycles, naval and commercial shipyard work in the Pacific Northwest, and DOE and nuclear facility upgrades all need qualified boilermakers. The bottleneck is apprenticeship completion — journeymen with the IBB card and ASME Section IX qualifications are scarce and command premium pay.
