- NCCER Ironworker Level 1–4 — The National Center for Construction Education and Research curriculum that anchors both Iron Workers Local union programs and non-union apprenticeships. Level 1 covers hand tools, blueprint reading, and ironworker fundamentals; Level 2 adds structural steel erection, rigging, and bolt-up; Level 3 covers rebar placement, post-tensioning, and reinforcing steel layout; Level 4 finishes with welding, burning, and supervision fundamentals. The credential that most contractors look for within the first three to four years.
- Iron Workers Local Union Journeyman Card — Awarded at completion of the three- to four-year International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers apprenticeship administered through approximately 165 Local unions across the U.S. and Canada. Required to work as a journeyman at signatory structural and rebar contractors and unlocks union benefits (pension, health, per-diem on traveling bridge and oil sands jobs). Non-union ironworkers earn the NCCER Ironworker Level 4 equivalent through contractor-run programs.
- OSHA-10 / OSHA-30 — OSHA-10 is the baseline safety credential expected on commercial sites; OSHA-30 is required for foremen and supervisors on industrial, bridge, and nuclear work. Most contractors and union Locals require OSHA-10 within the first 90 days of employment.
- NCCCO Rigger Level 1 / Level 2 + NCCCO Signaler — The National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) rigger and signaler credentials are required for crane-suspended work on structural steel, bridge girder setting, and rebar cage lifts. Rigger Level 1 covers basic slings, shackles, and chokers; Level 2 adds complex multi-leg sling configurations and capacity calculations. Signaler covers standard crane hand signals. - AWS D1.1 Plate (Tack & Seal-Off) — The American Welding Society D1.1 plate welding certification is required for tack and seal-off welds on both structural and rebar crews and is increasingly part of journeyman qualifications. Rigging & Signaling
The trade's signature skill set — NCCCO Rigger Level 1/2 and NCCCO Signaler cards or equivalent contractor-verified competency, with hands-on knowledge of slings, shackles, chokers, bridles, and crane hand signals. Required on every commercial, industrial, bridge, and structural steel project. The skill that prevents the catastrophic lift incidents that historically defined the trade's safety record.
Blueprint & Erection Drawings
AISC Steel Construction Manual and AWS A2.4 weld symbol interpretation separates journeymen from trainees. Erection drawings, piece-mark diagrams, and shop-detail drawings are the structural ironworker's daily reading. Mistakes at this stage cost rework, schedule, and on high-steel, the whole job. Required for any lead, foreman, or connector role.
Welding, Burning & Bolt-Up
Welding and burning — typically AWS D1.1 plate for tack and seal-off welds — is core on both structural and rebar crews and is increasingly required for hire. High-steel comfort is the structural ironworker's defining trait — MEWP / scissor-lift operation, personal fall-arrest systems, and a working comfort with 100+ feet of elevation. Required on every commercial, industrial, and bridge project. Ironworker specializations
The ironworking trade is unusually lane-diverse. Most journeymen pick one or two lanes and spend their career there. Here's the breakdown:
- Structural Steel Ironworker: Erects primary framing — beams, columns, girders, and bridge trusses — typically at high steel on commercial high-rise, industrial facilities, stadiums, and bridges. The largest single paycheck lane, the larger year-round demand, and the main path into Iron Workers Local signatory contractors. Many structural journeymen cross-train onto ornamental and curtain wall for seasonal work.
- Rebar Ironworker: Ties and places reinforcing steel — #4 through #18 bars at intersections — for cast-in-place concrete on foundations, footings, walls, decks, and tilt-up panels. ACI 318 and ACI 117 tolerances govern placement. The largest-volume lane by tonnage; year-round commercial and infrastructure work and the most direct bridge between the ironworker trade and concrete construction.
- Ornamental Ironworker: Installs architectural metal — stairs, railings, miscellaneous steel, decorative iron, and window-washing anchors. Often paired with structural on commercial high-rise where the same crew does core-and-shell plus architectural. Lower volume but clean indoor/finish work, often favored by journeymen who want off-high-steel careers.
- Curtain Wall / Metal Building: Erects pre-engineered metal buildings and architectural curtain wall — wall girts, roof purlins, cladding, and window-wall systems. Often routes through specialty contractors and is dominated by commercial and light-industrial work, particularly in the Southeast and Texas.
- Nuclear / High-Steel Clearance: Structural ironwork on nuclear new-build, Department of Energy sites, and similar high-security projects. OSHA-30, federal background check, QC/QA card, and clearable fitness-for-duty required. The premium-paid top tier — smaller crews, sometimes per-diem traveling, often with federal prevailing wage and 50–60 hour weeks.
Career progression — where you can go
Ironworkers often think the path is helper → apprentice → journeyman → foreman. That's the standard escalation, but the trade has more high-paying lanes — especially into high-steel, nuclear, and supervision:
- Ironworker Helper ($18–24/hr): Entry-level support role — material handling, shop cleanup, tool prep, rigging supplies, and ground work below the steel. The first 6–12 months for most apprentices. Learn the trade's tempo, the prints, and the journeymen above you.
- Apprentice / Year 1 ($20–28/hr): First-year apprentice on NCCER Ironworker Level 1 curriculum. Working toward the foundational credential that separates trainees from qualified ironworkers. The starting point for either the structural or rebar lane.
- Apprentice / Year 2–3 ($26–34/hr): Mid-program apprentice. NCCER Ironworker Level 2 and Level 3 — structural erection, rigging, bolt-up, rebar placement, and post-tensioning fundamentals. Building toward crew-level work and the journeyman card at year four.
- Journeyman Ironworker ($30–50/hr): Iron Workers Local journeyman card or NCCER Ironworker Level 4 complete. The first real market rate for a qualified ironworker — either structural or rebar lane. Often with NCCCO rigger/signaler and, increasingly, AWS D1.1 plate required for hire.
- Connector / Lead Connector ($36–52/hr): The structural ironworker's lead position — sequences connections, manages the bolt-up crew, and is the on-deck authority on AISC and RCSC splice procedures. The most demanding day-to-day position on a high-steel crew, and the most direct pathway to foreman.
- Foreman / General Foreman ($45–65/hr): Sequences work, manages a crew, runs the field erection. Often salaried at $95K–$140K with truck and tool allowance. Step before moving into QC, project management, or operations supervision.
- High-Steel / Nuclear Specialist ($50–70/hr): OSHA-30 plus federal clearance plus QC card unlocks the top-wage tier — structural ironwork on nuclear new-build, DOE sites, and T-Line bridge work. Often salaried plus per-diem, with $150K–$200K the realistic top end on 50–60 hour weeks.
- Ironwork Superintendent / QC ($70–110K+ salary): Runs multiple crews across a site or region. Coordinates with project managers, GC leadership, QC, and engineering on high-steel and nuclear work. Salaried plus bonus structure. The top field progression an ironworker can reach without leaving the trade.
- Union Instructor / Local Training Coordinator: Some journeymen move into the Iron Workers Local training center as instructors — teaching NCCER Ironworker Levels and NCCCO prep. Salaried plus pension and the satisfaction of building the next crew of journeymen. A path that keeps experienced hands in the trade while moving off the tools.
