Specialty rates and DOE-clearance premiums apply — this lane is stable, salaried, and benefits-heavy.
- Union contractors. Boilermakers International (IBB) signatory contractors hire through local lodges across the U.S. and Canada. Combination welders who hold both the IBB journeyman card and ASME Section IX qualification are scarce and command the top wage tier at union contractors, with pension and full health benefits from day one.

Most combination welder-boilermakers think of the path as structural welder → combination welder → lead welder → foreman. The dual-trade lane has more high-paying options than that — especially into inspection, QC, and supervision:
- Welder Helper ($18–22/hr): Entry-level support role — grinding, material handling, fit-up prep, and tool staging. The first 6–12 months before starting a formal apprenticeship. Learn the prints, the welders above you, and the shop / outage tempo.
- Structural Welder — AWS D1.1 plate only ($25–38/hr): Single-discipline plate welder. The starting point for the combination lane. Once you've consistently passed D1.1, the next step is adding ASME Section IX pipe qualification.
- Pipe Welder — ASME Section IX only ($40–70/hr): 6G-tested pipe welder on pressure vessel and process piping work. Higher per-hour rate than plate, but typically limited to pipe scopes only.
- Combination Welder — D1.1 + ASME Section IX ($42–68/hr base, $70+/hr on turnaround): Dual-qualified welder covering structural, pipe, and vessel work without a subcontracted qualifier.
