Rigging & Signaling

- Industrial / Heavy Structural: Steel erection on refineries, power plants, LNG terminals, mining facilities, and chemical processing sites. - Stadium / Arena: Erects long-span trusses, cantilevered roof structures, and architectural exposed steel on professional sports venues, convention centers, and entertainment venues. Heavy piece-mark work, complex geometry, and tight schedules.
- Nuclear / DOE: Structural ironwork on nuclear new-build, Department of Energy sites, and similar high-security projects. OSHA-30, federal background check, QC/QA card, and clearable fitness-for-duty required. The premium-paid top tier — smaller crews, sometimes per-diem traveling, often with federal prevailing wage and 50–60 hour weeks.
- Ornamental / Curtain Wall (Cross-Train): Many structural journeymen cross-train onto ornamental and curtain wall scopes — stairs, railings, miscellaneous steel, window-washing anchors, and architectural cladding. Often paired with structural on commercial high-rise where the same crew does core-and-shell plus architectural. Lower volume but clean indoor/finish work, often favored by journeymen who want off-high-steel careers without leaving the ironworker trade.
Career progression — where you can go
Structural ironworkers often think the path is helper → apprentice → journeyman → foreman. That's the standard escalation, but the structural lane has more high-paying exits — especially into connector / lead connector roles, high-steel, nuclear, and supervision:
- Ironworker Helper ($18–24/hr): Entry-level support role — material handling, shop cleanup, tool prep, rigging supplies, and ground work below the steel. The first 6–12 months for most apprentices. Learn the trade's tempo, the prints, and the journeymen above you.
- Apprentice / Year 1 ($20–28/hr): First-year apprentice on NCCER Ironworker Level 1 curriculum. Working toward the foundational credential that separates trainees from qualified structural ironworkers.
- Apprentice / Year 2–3 ($26–34/hr): Mid-program apprentice. NCCER Ironworker Level 2 — structural erection, rigging, bolt-up, drift-pin alignment, and high-steel fundamentals. Building toward crew-level work and the structural journeyman card at year four.
- Journeyman Structural Ironworker ($30–50/hr): Iron Workers Local journeyman card or NCCER Ironworker Level 4 complete. The first real market rate for a qualified structural ironworker. Often with NCCCO rigger/signaler and, increasingly, AWS D1.1 plate required for hire. Structural alignment / bolt-up at journeyman level earns the connector differential.
- Connector / Lead Connector ($36–52/hr): The structural ironworker's lead position — sequences connections, manages the bolt-up crew, and is the on-deck authority on AISC and RCSC splice procedures. The most demanding day-to-day position on a high-steel crew, and the most direct pathway to foreman.
- Foreman / General Foreman ($45–65/hr): Sequences work, manages a crew, runs the field erection. Often salaried at $95K–$140K with truck and tool allowance. Step before moving into QC, project management, or operations supervision.
- High-Steel / Nuclear Specialist ($50–70/hr): OSHA-30 plus federal clearance plus QC card plus AISC / RCSC splice fluency unlocks the top-wage tier — structural ironwork on nuclear new-build, DOE sites, and T-Line bridge work. Often salaried plus per-diem, with $150K–$200K the realistic top end on 50–60 hour weeks.
- Structural Ironwork Superintendent / QC ($70–110K+ salary): Runs multiple crews across a site or region. Coordinates with project managers, GC leadership, QC, and engineering on high-steel and nuclear work. Salaried plus bonus structure. The top field progression a structural ironworker can reach without leaving the trade.
- Union Instructor / Local Training Coordinator: Some structural journeymen move into the Iron Workers Local training center as instructors — teaching NCCER Ironworker Levels and NCCCO prep. Salaried plus pension and the satisfaction of building the next crew of structural journeymen. A path that keeps experienced hands in the trade while moving off the tools.
